Hi, I e-filed my 1040 on Apr 18 2023, but quickly received an email stating my tax return was rejected with the following error: "IND-517-01 - A Dependent SSN in the return must not be the same as the Primary or Spouse SSN on another return where 'PrimaryClaimAsDependentInd' or 'SpouseClaimAsDependentInd' is not checked."
My son had e-filed his 1040 two days before I e-filed mine claiming him as my dependent. I opened his return and verified the following in the "Step-by-Step" "Personal Info" section:
In addition, in my son's 1040 PDF form, I see this filled:
In summary, I feel like both my son and I filled our 1040s correctly. But the IRS doesn't think so, and I do not know why.
My questions are:
Thank you for your help.

I have a similar situation to you (Dependent e-filed first, I e-filed later - all information was correct identifying as dependent on his return).
I also received IND-517-01 and was certain my dependent filled it out correctly but he received an IND-452 error before I even e-filed, and upon filing again has continued to receive that error code. There's a possibility someone used his information for a fraudulent tax return, so we're looking into that, and this may not be the same situation but if you don't mind me asking, did your dependent also receive a rejection from the IRS when e-filing or did theirs get accepted and only yours is rejected?
