Why is my direct-deposited refund or check lower than the amount in TurboTax?

Why is My Tax Refund Not What I Expected

The third Economic Impact Payment of $1400 per person was sent out in March of 2021. The IRS may be saying you got it and are asking for it again on you return.

I never received the $1400 and don’t have any debt or anything . I tried finding out more about it but no answers the letter I got in the mail wasn’t informative at all either .

If it was $1400, it was most likely the 3rd stimulus payment.   Did you not receive it and then claim it as the Recovery Rebate on this year's return?    If you do not understand the explanatory letter that you received, you will need to contact the IRS so they can provide you with a more detailed explanation.   Contact the IRS

$1400 was the amount of the 3rd stimulus but the reduction could have been for an offset that you don't know about or something else entirely.   Only the IRS can provide you any details.  We do not get or have access to any IRS processing information here at TurboTax.   From the IRS FAQ on this topic:

'''All or part of your refund may have been used (offset) to pay off past-due federal tax, state income tax, state unemployment compensation debts, child support, spousal support, or other federal nontax debts, such as student loans. To find out if you may have an offset or if you have questions about an offset, contact the agency to which you owe the debt.

We also may have changed your refund amount because we made changes to your tax return. This may include corrections to any incorrect Recovery Rebate Credit amount. You’ll get a notice explaining the changes. Where’s My Refund? will reflect the reasons for the refund offset when it relates to a change in your tax return.

Tax Topic 203, Refund Offsets for Unpaid Child Support, Certain Federal and State Debts, and Unemplo... has more information about refund offsets.'''
