The IRS is not processing mailed tax returns during the stay-at-home period. So you will only receive your refund after the IRS has processed your return.
I’m very concerned my tax info I mailed in was lost! Mailed it at the end of February and no refund yet! Also when I check my status it replies that my info is incorrect- I cannot talk with a person! This is frustrating!
If you did not use some sort of tracking when you mailed it you will not know if the IRS received your refund. In normal times you would be able to see something on the IRS site about four weeks after mailing it. Unfortunately, that would be about the time the IRS began to be so backlogged they stopped opening the mail....
Here is what they are saying about mailed returns:
Per the IRS website IRS Operations During COVID-19: Mission-critical functions continue: The IRS is not currently able to process individual paper tax returns. If you already have filed via paper but it has not yet been processed, do not file a second tax return or write to the IRS to inquire about the status of your return or your economic impact payment. Paper returns will be processed once processing centers are able to reopen.
TurboTax will not know anything about your mailed return, and will continue to show “Ready to Mail” on your account. TurboTax will not know that you put your tax return in an envelope and took it to a mailbox. TurboTax does not get updates on mailed (or e-filed) returns.
When the IRS finally opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site. You will need your Social Security number, your filing status and the refund amount from line 20 of your Form 1040.
State returns have to be mailed to the state.
