In order to deliver money as quickly as possible to those who need it, the IRS is sending stimulus payments to eligible taxpayers who filed a tax return in either 2019 or 2018 and chose to receive their refund via direct deposit into their checking account. These taxpayers will automatically have their stimulus payment deposited into the account they received their refund.
We have not yet received confirmation from the IRS on whether they will be putting stimulus payments on prepaid debit cards. However, we have noticed that the IRS has started depositing stimulus payments on some prepaid debit cards for taxpayers that chose to receive their refund through that method in tax year 2019 or 2018. If you received your refund on a prepaid debit card in tax year 2019 or 2018, here is what you need to know:
I had fee for turbo tax taken out of my refund, I too was expecting to receive my stimulus payment on my turbo card, the IRS website just put up a tool to check your payments, I entered my info and it said "you qualify for a stimulus payment but we didn't have enough info to send you a payment" my guess is since I didn't pay my fee's up front for turbo tax they can't put my stimulus payment on my turbo card, I was able to put in my checking account information on the IRS website but it didn't give me any info at all as to when to expect my stimulus money. hope this helps anyone who reads this.
One question that I haven't addressed in detail until now is what happens if your refund was tied to a refund anticipation loan (RAL), refund anticipation check (RAC), or similar product. In those events, refunds are not usually directed to your bank account, but rather to an account managed by a third party (like a lender or preparer). The question, of course, is how to make sure that money gets to you - as the taxpayer - and not to the third party.
If the tax returns also transmitted your underlying bank account information of the taxpayer, the IRS may be able to direct deposit refunds into your regular bank account. If that's not possible - and the IRS doesn't have your information on file - they'll send your check by mail.
