Why didn't I get a recovery rebate. I just filed my 2020 taxes, and haven't gotten any previous stimulus money and don't have an AGI above 75,000.

If you have not received one or both of your stimulus checks, you will receive your payment in the form of a Recovery Rebate Credit on line 30 of your 2020 Federal tax return when you file.

TurboTax will compare your one or two stimulus payment amounts to the computations within TurboTax.  The computations within TurboTax are based upon the information that you have entered into the tax software.  If you are due an additional amount, it will be issued as a Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC) on line 30 of the 2020 1040 tax return.

If you have e-filed your 2020 Federal tax return and the tax return is accepted by the IRS, you will have to amend your 2020 Federal tax return and correct the entries and calculations to receive the Recovery Rebate Credit.

If you have e-filed your 2020 Federal tax return and the tax return is rejected by the IRS, you will have to correct the entries and calculations to receive the Recovery Rebate Credit as well as correct the entries that generated the rejection.

In TurboTax Online, you are prompted to input stimulus check 1 and stimulus check 2 information under Review down the left hand side of the screen.

You can access your stimulus check choices by following these steps:

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
  • Across the top of the screen, click on Other Tax Situations.
  • At the screen Let’s keep going to wrap up.  Click on Let’s keep going.
  • At the screen Let’s make sure you got the right stimulus amount, click Continue.
  • At the screen Did you get a stimulus payment? you can update your stimulus check entries.

I don't believe this answers the question here.

Which is why wasn't the recovery rebate included if they already got their tax refund and they qualify?

If Line 30 on form 1040 is non-zero , that is your missing EIP recovery rebate

You should make sure that the questions were answered in TurboTax about receiving the Stimulus checks.  There is a Form Recovery Rebate Credit that is required to be completed that generates the rebate credit.  Check Line 30 on the tax return to see if there is an entry.  So if you did not Complete the form "Recovery Rebate Credit",  you can amend your return just to complete that form.

Here is how to access Recovery Rebate Credit in TurboTax:

I'm in the same situation. My husband and I had 9 children as of 2020. Our eldest was too old for the stimulus payment (turned 19 in 2020). We received $5,900 and $5400 respectively in stimulus. Turbotax determined we didn't receive stimulus for our daughter born 2020 when I was filing. My return included the RR. The IRS counted her as a dependent, as well as for our child tax credit and additional child tax credit. Clearly, the IRS found the information on our newest child to be accurate. Why wouldn't they give us the Recovery Rebate?

From the amounts you received, it looks like the first stimulus was for 2 Taxpayers and 7 children [$2400+ ($500x7)].  The second looks like it was for 2 taxpayers and 7 children as well, ($600x9).

The payments were an advance credit for 2020.  2019 information was used in sending out the payments since 2020 tax returns had not been filed at the point the stimulus payments were sent out.  They are being reconciled when you do your 2020 return.  In some cases, people may have been given a stimulus payment based on their 2019 dependents that did not qualify based on their 2020 dependents, and vice versa.

How many dependents under age 17 did you have on your 2020 return?  If on your 2020 return you had 9 dependents, but only 7 were under 17 then you received the correct amount.

I had 9 dependents in 2020; 8 of them were under 17.

And before you say it; all 8 are STILL under 17 until 2022.

Obviously I did if she counts as one of my dependents for the full year for child tax credits.

You mentioned that you had 8 children under 17 in 2019 and the same number in 2020, if that is true, then your stimulus payments received based on your 2019 return would be correct and you wouldn't be due any additional money.

Otherwise, the IRS owes you a stimulus check for the additional dependent in 2020, so you would have to contact them to find out why you didn't receive it. Their number is 1-800-829-1040.

1-4.png5-15.png15-21.pngNo. I had 7 children under 17 in 2019 and 8 under 17 in 2020.

(500x7)+2400=5900

600x9=5400

With the 2020 baby it should have been

(500x8)+2400=6400

600 x 10 =6000

Incidentally we did receive third stimulus for her. I have no idea why they included her for the third but excluded her for the first and second. She is eligible according to the IRS worksheet because she was a dependent in 2020.

The first batch of stimulus payments arrived as early as the weekend of March 12, with more arriving over the next week. Further batches of payments will arrive during the following weeks by direct deposit, as well as checks or debit cards through the mail in some cases.

Yes, your calculations are correct.

As @CatinaT1 pointed out, you must indicate that the 2020 dependent lived with you the whole year. Now, this seems obvious, but consider what month the baby was born....In TurboTax, the month of birth does not matter.

To properly add the baby as a dependent in 2020, the response must be 12 months.
