Where's the rest of my refund???

Our federal refund is MUCH less and came from TPG PRODUCTS SBTPG LLC (who is that???). This is the message we received on the IRS Refund Status Results:

We changed the amount claimed as Recovery Rebate Credit on your tax return. The error was in one or more of the following:
  • The Social Security number of one or more individuals claimed as a qualifying dependent was missing or incomplete.
  • The last name of one or more individuals claimed as a qualifying dependent does not match our records.
  • One or more individuals claimed as a qualifying dependent exceeds the age limit.
  • Your adjusted gross income exceeds $75,000 ($150,000 if married filing jointly, $112,500 if head of household).
  • The amount was computed incorrectly.

Well, we don't have any dependents and our Adjusted Gross Income is nowhere near $150,000! How did this TPG PRODUCTS SBTPG LLC come up with these "issues"? We'd like the rest of our refund please.

The refund status message is a generic message when the IRS is going to make changes to your return. You should have received a letter from the IRS telling you that they were adjusting your refund amount and the reason they were doing it.  If you are missing $1,400 (or $2,800 if married filing jointly) the IRS  records probably state that you did receive the third stimulus in 2021 when they were being sent out which is why they removed it from your return.

You can go back and check your bank records to see when you received it. Some people received as late as December, others as early as May.  If you absolutely did not receive it you can contact the IRS at 800-829-1040

Where's the rest of my refund???

Thank you for your quick response. We received the $2800 in March of 2021. It’s on line 30 of our 1040, so why was it deducted from our refund?

Where's the rest of my refund???

As you were finishing up your return, you were asked about the recovery rebate and how much you received.  You likely entered $0, but as you noted you received the $2,800 in March so you should have entered $2,800 instead of $0. When you told TurboTax $0, it included it in your refund, however, this was a one time payment so since you already received it, the IRS new this and removed it from your refund.

The only people who should be getting the Recovery Rebate with their tax refunds are those who did not receive the payment at all last year.

The IRS will follow-up with a letter to explain any adjustments to your return.  TurboTax does not process refunds and therefore cannot assist with this inquiry.  TurboTax does not receive notices about taxpayer accounts.  This is a Privacy Law issue.

However, we have been hearing about adjustments relating to mishandling of the Advanced Tax Credit.  If you received The Advanced Child Tax Credit which started in July, you would have had to show that on the return.

We have also heard about adjustments due to incorrectly reporting Stimulus payments received.

Now both of these issues had letters sent out by the IRS advising you to show them on the return, if you did not then your return would be adjusted to accommodate that.

However, all of the above are just scenarios that may or may not apply to you.  You can call the IRS which would be almost impossible to reach someone during filing season or just wait for the notice.

I absolutely did not receive my third stimulus check and only got 160 back when I should've gotten 1800. I've tried calling the IRS multiple times to no avail. Who can I speak with properly in order to get this situated?? I really needed that money for rent, when college is let out for the summer.
