Refund shown as soon as trying to Amend 2021 E-filed return - Incorrect Original AGI and other fields in 1040-X

I am using a Download version of Home and Business 2021 and there is BUG is creating Amendments.  I had paid the federal taxes due when I had filed for extension of the 2021 return. Subsequently I had e-filed the return.

I have now received a W2C for 2021 from Employer with minor additional income.
Issues I see are :
1. As soon as I go to Amend the already e-filed and accepted 2021 return I see federal refund amount.  This is a bit less than the tax due amount that I had paid on April 20, 2021 when extension was filed.

2. Also when I update the W2 and check the1040X  line 1 - Original AGI it also has a increase a bit less than the refund amount shown,

This clearly points to a BUG in the program.
Also how can I talk to support and show them the issue and get help.

Thanks and Regards,

x

Refund shown as soon as trying to Amend 2021 E-filed return - Incorrect Original AGI and other fields in 1040-X

Thanks @Anonymous_ for the page about contact information for support.  Any idea why I immediately get a refund option when my W2C has some additional wage amount ?  I had gone all the way to the end of the interview and smart review.

When amending STOP looking at the sometimes confusing Refund-O-Meter and only look at the1040X ... Switch to the FORMS mode :

Look at the form 1040X …

Column A should have the figures from the original return, Column C the corrected figures and Column B the differences between the other 2 which needs an explanation on page 2 of the form 1040X.

If you completed it correctly you will see an entry on either line 16 OR 18:

On line 16 should be the amount you paid with your original return. If you paid nothing already then this line should be zero.

On line 18 should be the amount of your original refund you received.  If you have not received your refund yet then you need to wait for it.  If the refund changes from what you expected then this line must reflect that change.

Then you will see your extra refund on line 22 OR  the new balance due you need to pay on line 20.

@Critter-3  Appreciate this insight.  Forms mode 1040X that gets filled is not showing correct amounts.

Line 1 Column A - "Original AGI" is incorrect. It shows much higher amount.   However, In the Your Amended return Summary in the step-by-step mode the 2021 return Original AGI showed correct !
Line 16 "Total amount paid with request for extension of time" is incorrect. It shows much higher amount but slightly less that the difference in Line 1.

Line 18 "overpayment" shows 0 -   Note that I have overpaid slightly during filing which in return was Refund Applied to 2022 ES Tax -Estimated tax.

Line 20 "Amount you owe" is blank , Line 21 "Overpaid" has a high amount as in the Refund-O-Meter ! and hence Line 22 also has the same amount.

On the W2C I have additional Wages so definitely do not expect any (or this large) refund.

In the 1040X Forms mode the Original 2021 Return Payments Smart Worksheet has following incorrect values

A - "Total amount paid with request for extension of time to file"  - Incorrectly shows 0

B-" Tax Paid with original return (not including penalties)" Incorrectly shows almost double amount that should be in A

C -"Additional tax paid after return was filed" - Is blank and correct

I am not sure if I should try to adjust these values in 1040X.

Thank you!

Ok ... start with problem #1 ... if column A of the 1040X is NOT the same as the originally filed return then you messed up somewhere.  UNDO the amendment and remove any changes you made  then start the amendment process again ONLY when the return is back to the as filed state.

How do I cancel or undo an amended return in TurboTax Online?

If you started amending your tax return by accident and would like to cancel the amendment:

  1. Open your return if it’s not already open.
  2. In the left menu select Cancel amend.
  3. Select Yes, I want to cancel my amended return.

How do I cancel or undo an amended return in the TurboTax CD/Download software?

If you started amending your federal return by accident and would like to cancel the amendment, follow this process to correctly "unamend" your federal return:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Switch to Forms Mode (Windows instructions | Mac instructions).
  3. In the left pane, select Form 1040X.
    • Windows: After the form is generated in the right pane, click the Delete Form button at the bottom of the window.
    • Mac: From the Forms menu, select Remove Form 1040X.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the 1040X from your return

  1. Important: Go back through the TurboTax interview and undo any changes you made after you selected the option to amend your  return, as merely deleting the 1040X will not undo those manual entries for you.

State Amendments

The best way to "unamend" your state return is to go through your state return from the beginning and keep your eyes peeled for amend-related screens or questions.

The amend question usually appears right at the beginning or towards the end of the state interview (never in the middle).

Correct any entries that have to do with an amended return, e.g.:

  • Answer No when asked if you want to amend;
  • Clear any amend-related checkboxes;
  • Delete entries in the tax year field.
  • Note: In a few state programs, you actually have to answer Yes to the amend question so you can revisit the screens that contain the information you want to delete.

If you still can't get rid of your state amendment form, try clearing your state return and starting over.

@Critter-3   Thanks again. I had a backup for the tax file.  So instead cancelling and undoing Amendment, I start over the Amendment again from the beginning.

As soon as I start the Amendment, even before I update the W2 with the corrected values, in the 1040-X I still see the wrong higher AGI in line 1.

Even when I complete the step-by-step process and ensure that 1040-X is complete I still get the same result.

That is the Refund-O-Meter and 1040-X both showing a huge refund.

However as before the Summary of the Amendment at the end of Step-By-Step process shows correct original AGI !

Best Regards

@Critter-3

I think I will be able to e-file the federal amendment but will mail the state.  I worked with a Turbo Tax support expert today who got a tech support on with them that was good extra pair of eyes and some moral support.  Here is how I plan to attack this and following changes were done by me.

In the Forms Mode 1040X  Before Line 16, I saw that the Original 2021 Return Payments Smart Worksheet section, B- The Tax paid with original return was almost doubled up.  I removed it and instead filled the empty amount  A-  Total amount paid with request for extension of time to file with actual payment done in April 2022.

Moreover, I used the correct "Your Amended Return Summary" shown in Step-by-Step mode to update the 1040-X column A - Original Amount lines 1, 5, 6, 7 and 12 -that were incorrect.  Example picture below.Screenshot 2023-01-09 220810.png

After doing this I see correct reduced tax / refund in the refund-o-meter.  As well as the PDF forms generated for Filing is looking reasonable without the huge refund.
