I realized a mistake was made when filing my taxes and some necessary forms were not included.
I was hoping to submit a superseded return so that I would avoid any penalties.
However, I have read mixed things online about whether you can really do a superseded tax return, so wasn't sure if this is possible to do one in the first place.
If a superseded tax return is possible, then ideally I'd like to have some more time so I could have a professional review everything. So I was wondering if it's also possible to file for an extension AFTER you've already filed your taxes but before the deadline?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
No. And you cannot get an extension if you already filed.
You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner. The IRS does not allow you to take it back.
If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.” The changes will go nowhere.
Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.
If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X.
Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed
Hello,
Thank you very much for the fast reply.
I was not owed any refund and have already paid the taxes I owed to the IRS for this year. The return was also accepted by the IRS a few weeks ago. Would that make a difference on when I'd be able to begin correcting it?
A superseding return is defined as a second (or subsequent) return can be filed on or before the due date for filing, including extensions.
A superseding return must be filed on a paper Form 1040 – e-filing is not allowed. Write "Superseding Return" at the top of the form.

If your return has been accepted and you already paid your tax due, then go ahead and start your amended return if you want to. Understand that it will be months before the IRS processes it. They have a huge backlog of amended returns.
