Tax Year Prior to 2020: I finished and filed my taxes yesterday, only to realize that turbo tax never asked my information from my 1095A. Should I amend my return? Why did turbo tax not walk me through this form 8962?

Is there a penalty for not including this with my return? Will it affect my refund? Please, help!

If you already filed your return you will need to wait to see if it was rejected or accepted. If they were rejected you are able to login to your return to fix what you need to fix and fix the errors that caused the rejection and refile the return. If your returns were accepted, then you will need to file an amended return.

You should not try to amend your return until the original return it has been fully processed and you have received your refund or your payment has cleared.
Amended returns do not “catch up” to your original return and replace them; they are processed as two separate returns.  Amended returns have to be printed and filed by mail.  It can take the IRS up to 12 weeks or longer to process them.

If you are due a larger refund than on your original return, your amended return should only show the difference and you will receive a separate check for it.  If you owe money on your amended return, it will show only the new amount owed, you will have to mail a check with the return.

You can check the status of your amended return by clicking here: https://www.irs.gov/filing/individuals/amended-returns-form-1040-x-/wheres-my-amended-return-1

Unfortunately, I'm still very confused.  I'm getting conflicting advice.  If you could answer a few questions directly, that would be greatly appreciated. My return was accepted right away.  It has been over 6 weeks, and I have not received my refund, or any notice from the IRS. The Where's My Refund tool shows as processing.

1) Why didn't TurboTax ask me about the 1095-A (and fill out the form 8962 for me or provide instructions)?
2) Do I really need to file an amended return or do I just file the missing form 8962, which is apprently supposed to be sent separately anyway (according to info found on turboTax)

I am in desperate need of my return and not at all sure how to proceed.

IRS operations are limited during the Covid-19 pandemic.  Attached is a link with more information as to what departments are available to contact at the moment.

IRS operations

In regards to Form 1095-A, you should have entered the information for your 1095-A form as follows:

Go to your Federal interview section.

  1. Select Deductions & Credits
  2. Scroll down to All Tax Breaks
  3. Select Medical
  4. Select Affordable Care Act (Form 1095-A)

If you entered it as indicated above, TurboTax would have generated Form 8962 for the Premium Tax Credit.

The requirement to provide health insurance coverage was removed for 2019.  So anyone with private insurance did not have to provide information.  Since you had insurance through the Marketplace, you still have a reporting requirement as your may be subject to the Premium Tax Credit calculation.

You do not need to amend your return.

You can follow the instructions in the following help article to create Form 8962 in TurboTax and submit with your Form 1095-A.

It has been over a YEAR and I still have not heard anything on my 2019 refund from the IRS.  I got a letter over the summer stating they needed the 1095-A and associated form 8962, but by then, I had already received conflicting advice from the community, and decided to amend my return and mail it in, and there was an increase to my refund.  The subsequent letter from the IRS confirmed that I did not need to amend, but by then it was too late.  I cannot get any help by calling the IRS, because they aren't answering the phone, and I have no idea what to do.  Any help is greatly appreciated.
