Per the IRS, you should not amend your return for an adjustment for unemployment. An adjustment will be calculated and your refund will be issued to you automatically, if you qualify. The IRS will be automatically adjusting refunds starting in May and will continuing into the summer.
IRS to recalculate taxes on unemployment benefits; refunds to start in May
the very link you post contradicts what you said.
To quote:
"However, taxpayers would have to file an amended return if they did not originally claim the EITC or other credits but now are eligible because the exclusion changed their income."
This is the real scoop.
Any other posts you see that are contradictory are wrong.
Because TurboTax changed the forms, you can't see what you originally were eligible for unless you made a paper copy of your filed return for your records immediately upon submitting it.
My situation seems to be a little more complicated and I do not find an answer on the TurboTax Support site.
I filed in late March and TurboTax shoed that I owed the IRS.
Three weeks later in mid April, I checked my TurboTax, and my taxes changed... TurboTax was showing that I was owed a Refund! At the time, I received a message from TurboTax that I would be notified when the new rules were implemented and would receive an e-mail telling what actions I should take. I never received any e-mail.
Today, I opened TurboTax and there are two files and they show different amounts. One shows that I owe the IRS, the other shows that the IRS owes me a refund. I'm thinking I should file an amended return just to cover myself with the IRS but there is no help or guidance on the TurboTax site.
which one is the one you e-Filed.?
Only you can tell, usually by giving good file names that make the answer clear.
The first version I created and filed with the IRS that says I owe $1K+.
