e-file rejected

in 2018 a 1040X was sent in but the IRS is not seeing or not using it.   The incorrect filling has a AGI as 191676 (INCORRECT) The 1040X  has a AGI of158870 (CORRECT).  Do I have to change it  back to the incorrect AGI?  Can I re-efle after this change,or send by mail? When I e-filed  I set up for automatic payment from my checking.  What happens to this?

You would use the AGI from your original 2018 tax return.  Do not use the amount from your amended return.

When your return gets rejected no information is sent to the IRS, so your payment information has not gone through.

Yes the replay helped me. I changed it back to the original 2018 AGI and re-efiled. I have not heard if the corrected e-filing has been received. Wished I had mailed.

You can check your e-file status yourself:

How do I check my e-file status?

Sign in to TurboTax to check your current status. You'll find it in Tax Home after sign in.

If you've got an Alexa device, you can enable it to check for you.

If you used TurboTax CD/Downloadyou can check your e-file status by opening the File menu and selecting Check E-filing status or by opening your return, selecting the File tab, and selecting the Check E-file Status header.

    Keep in mind:

    • E-filing status is what stage of the process your return is in.
    • Refund status is when you can expect you refund. If that’s what you’re interested in, go to Where's My Refund?

Do loop of information. Rejected -->Confirm AGI --> Confirmed with number from Turbo Tax AGI from 2018 --> e-file again --> Rejected.... and on and on. I did not find an alternative to fixing this problem or what to do if not resolved. ALso, with the rejection, Turbo Tax highlights the PIN number. Am I to remove? Nothing to change. I am making an assumption that my ONLY option is to file by mail. Now, it is not clear if I need a letter or include the rejected notice with the mailed copy to show I filed on time. Frustrating and makes Turbo Tax more trouble than the help it provides. There are options to Turbo Tax and after 5 years of purchasing, I will not again.

My E-File keeps being rejected for incorrect PIN numbers after I corrected  the format of the PIN number. What should I do?

Provided that my E-File, (which includes a payment plan request) is accepted am I required to mail a hard copy?

If your e-file is accepted you do not need to mail anything--it is all electronic,  But if you cannot fix your Pin or AGI and get the e-file accepted you will have to print sign and mail the return.  You have five days to try to e-file it again.  After that, e-filing will shut down and you will need to print sign and mail your return and include a copy of the e-file rejection notice with the return.

Your 2018 tax return shows your 2018 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) If you filed a joint return then the AGI is the same for each of you.

    Form 1040        line 7

If you are using the same TT account that you used last year, you should also be able to find this number in your Tax Home for 2018

If entering the amount from your 2018 tax return does not work, then try entering “0” instead.  If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.

You can get a free transcript of your past return from the IRS:

    https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

Note: If you filed late or amended your return, your correct 2018 AGI may not be in the system.

I had to file an amended return for 2019 (the reason I went to TurboTax this year) and I believe that is causing my efile for 2020 to be rejected.  Is there anything I can do to correct the situation and still efile?

    Level 15

Try using zero as the AGI

I used Turbo Tax to prepare my 2020 tax return and tried to e-file it.  I have used  Turbo Tax for many years.   The 2020 was rejected because, according to the message from Turbo Tax, there was a problem with either the Pin number or the Adjusted Gross Income stated for previous year.

I have never had to use a Pin number in previous years so I tried severl times to not use a Pin number or use several different numbers as Turbo Tax suggests in the 2020 program.  All rejected.

I checked the AGI number I reported for 2019 and it checks exAcctly with the previous years filing.  The AGI for 2019 is significantly larger becase I withdrew funds from my after-tax savings fund, most of whichi was earnings on the fund.  The AGI amount I reported for 2019 in the 2020 submisiois exactly what is shown on line 8b and in the Turbo Tax summary sheet for 2019.

After several attempts to submit the 2020 e-file. I chose yesterday to subscribe to Turbo Tax help for $40.    What happens next?

No one is suggesting you use a 2018 AGI on a 2020 tax return.  Where are you seeing that?

If the IRS is rejecting the 2019 AGI you entered then there is a good possibility that the IRS has not fully processed your 2019 tax return and/or the IRS does not have your 2019 AGI for your name and Social Security number in their database.

Enter a 0 (zero) for the 2019 AGI and e-file the tax return again.

To revisit the 2019 AGI section in TurboTax Online:

    1. Sign in and open your return, if you haven't already done so.
    2. From the left menu, select File (tap in the upper-left corner to expand the menu on mobile devices).
    3. Select Start next to Step 3 (if needed, revisit Steps 1 and/or 2 to activate Step 3).
    4. Select I want to e-file.
    5. Continue until you see the place to enter your 2019 AGI.

You only enter a whole number for the 2019 AGI, no decimal and no cents.

If your 2019 AGI is being rejected by the IRS then try entering a 0 (zero) for the 2019 AGI and e-file again.
