Hello Mike,

The Notice was a CP22A. It said we have changed your 2020 Form 1040SR on the tentative carryback application or carryback claim you filed. You owe $$$.$$.

I have no idea what a carryback claim or tentative carryback application is.

Thank you for your help!

WHEN A CARRYBACK IS AVAILABLE for an individual that can be usually be done using a 1040-X or sometimes Form 1045. however, we need more details of what you're trying to do and what years are involved because different years have different rules in order to advise you. personal info is not needed, note some items cannot be carried back. also, what was the number on the IRS notice and what did it say?

review your filed tax return for  unusual Forms or Schedules that you don't recognize.

Otherwise, just accept the IRS findings, and pay up.

I received the same CP22A Notice claiming I owe money because they changed the 2020 Form 1040 based on a tentative carryback application. I have no idea what this is and I WILL NOT PAY UP for something that is not even explained. I am nothing going to throw my hard earned money away. I will only pay for it when I understand what this charge is for.

Also as taxpayers we have the right "The Taxpaper Bill of Rights" to be informed and understand what they are charging us for. If we do not feel it is just we have the right to challenger the IRS's position and be heard.

You are correct.

You can dispute the findings of the IRS. The notice should tell you how to do it.

Your only argument at this time is that you filed a complete and correct tax return.

@Evelyn 1 @Joannde - there is another thread that just posted related to this carryback claim.  The OP talked to the IRS and this relates to the 2nd half of the deferred self-employment tax of COVID relief.  in 2020 did you defer payment of this tax?
