My 2019 federal tax return has been accepted and I owed money . I forgot to add my 1098 T for my college kids . When I amended it know shows I’m due a refund.
I did not mail in the first one or amended one . Do I just mail in the amended one ? Or do I need to send in original first with payment ?

Ok ... if you filed the original return and have NOT paid the balance due yet then MAIL the amended return by 7/15.
NOW review the 1040X carefully ... it assumes you PAID the balance due on line 16 ... if you did not then that line needs to be corrected and the rest of the form recomputed. Do you still get a refund ? Or do you just owe less ? If you do have a balance due then send the payment with the 1040X if you can ... if you cannot send the full amount then send what you can and the IRS will bill you for the balance + penalty + interest.
On the form 1040X …
Column A should have the figures from the original return, Column C the corrected figures and Column B the differences between the other 2 which needs an explanation on page 2 of the form 1040X.
If you completed it correctly you will see an entry on either line 16 OR 18:
On line 16 should be the amount you paid with your original return.
On line 18 should be the amount of your original refund you received.
Then you will see your extra refund on line 22 OR the new balance due you need to pay on line 20.
Also ... since amended returns take 4 months or more to process ... don't be surprised if an automated balance due letter is sent ... since you know you amended then just ignore those incorrect notices.
