I e-filed my return back in April, then I got a letter saying I owed more tax. I replied to the letter both in writing and by phone (several times). I have not received a reply to my letter but have been told three times on the phone that the IRS agree with my argument and twice I was given dates in June to get the refund. Neither date was met.
Today. my wife and I have been on the phone for 5 hours and the agent we spoke to confirmed we will get the refund but seemed vague as to when!
My question to the community is: Do you have any advice on how I should proceed eg get a lawyer involved etc? There is a significant amount of money involved.

@briandsmith - my advice: have patience..... the IRS is woefully understaffed and literally 8 million paper filed tax returns, mainly from 2021, have yet to be processed. Be thankful you were able to get someone on the phone to talk to. From what I've read the agents on the phone don't know anything beyond what is on the transcripts or the where's my refund app.
write a letter detailing your conversations and your arguement on why the adjustment needs to occur in your favor.
how signficant are we talking? is it worth a lawyer and the costs of the lawyer.
have you contacted the advocate office?
If IRS says they have agreed with your position, there is nothing to do but wait.
Hiring a lawyer is not going to speed things up.
