Can I use Turbo Tax to amend my taxes when a partial refund was received (i.e. my tax refund was adjusted by the IRS)?

When I use the online form, it assumes I was given a full refund. I was not.  Using the online form, it thinks I owe $553 when in reality I am owed about $600.  Do I have to manually (or use another online service) to fix this?

Thank you for your help AmyC

I went through the online process (all the way to the end) and found that I can not use the online software to change the amount received.  This is line 18 from Form 1040-X

18 Overpayment, if any, as shown on original return or as previously adjusted by the IRS . . . . . 1,840.

The actual amount I received from the IRS was $640, not $1840.  Since I'm unable to change the line (from $1840 to $640), the process thinks I owe the IRS $553.

Perhaps I need to switch to and use Turbo Tax/CD download to make the modification and efile?

If the IRS adjusted your Refund, they will send you a letter telling you why they did so.

Wait until you receive that letter before amending your return, as you may not need to amend.

$600 sounds like the amount of the second stimulus payment.  If you claimed a Recovery Rebate Credit on your original return, they are checking the credit against their records of payments sent out.

I should elaborate.  I forgot to report my wife's social security income, so I need to send an amended return.  I did receive a letter and the partial refund, but if you factor in my wifes social security income I am entitled to the second stimulus check.  My question is not about having to amend my return or not, I know that I need to.  My question is can I use Turbo Tax to do so?  As I explained, it assumes I received $x refund, but I messed up on reporting my incoming (and the IRS did not adjust my taxes correctly because they don't have all the facts).

Yes. You can adjust the amount received.

Once your original return is accepted and the finances are settled, you can file an amended return.

I ended up using Turbo Tax to generate the amended return which was mostly correct.  Then I chose the mail in my return option, saved the forms to my computer, and altered them with the corrections I needed to make.  Not the most optimal solution, but it did save me a lot of time.

In the future, it would be nice if turbotax enhanced the online process so the amount paid to the IRS (line 18 on form 1040X) can be modified and factored into the equation.

@dwilli10

It's interesting all the answers dance around the actual question but never answer it.

I suspect there is a way, but you did not find it and gave up.

Oh well.
