Can anyone tell me about form D 400? my return said it looked good but i had to wait on this form.

For those of you still mystified about the D-400 form, try this (I'm assuming you've already started your NC return in TT):

1.  Under the View option, select "Switch to Forms,"

2. Now in the left-hand list of forms, scroll down past the Federal 1040 and related forms until you reach the NC section.

3. There you will find the D-400.  Open it and behold the form that gets submitted, and has always been submitted, for NC returns.

Because this form won't be finalized until 2/10, don't be surprised if TT has slathered it with "DO NOT PRINT" or other such warnings.  I assume that when we go back into TT after 2/10 and update, these warnings will be gone.

Good directions for those that have the "Desktop" software.

But many of these folks are using the "Online" software that doesn't have a Forms Mode.

They can still see the NC forms if they print out or create a PDF of their Fed+State tax file.....but it appears many of them have never bothered to do so for many years.

People should be generating a hard copy of their Federal and State tax files every year, and store it in folder....never depend on having access to it later from some electronic storage location.

D Forms are up on TT, but filing is still unavailable for State of NC.

I have seen where some people have been able to push their forms through. I was not one of these people. It will give this error:

"Tax year 2021 transmissions are not available".

I would advise trying again after 22 Feb; however, no firm date has been released, only stated that in "mid-February" NC will be ready to process forms. Good luck!

I had the same issue and I finally got an email that I can file but not it will not transmit. I know I have to pay. Seem State taxes are issue this year

Yeah, that email was poorly worded.  It should have made it clear that what was ready, was JUST the forms for printing and mail filing.   E-filing those NC forms is still not ready, and scheduled to be ready for E-Filing, on/after 24 Feb.

E-filing would still be likely to get processed sooner.

The point is turbo tax they self have said “this is the first year This has happened and it is something on our end”. Normally  it wouldn’t be a problem and forms would be available. So the questions are valid.  Half of us file every year and never had this issues therefore we didn’t know what it is smart guy

This is the first year I got the message I had to wait for this form. I just got an email super early this morning saying it was available and that I was able to finish filing my taxes. I'm skeptical though because although it said the form was ready, I don't see it anywhere? Am I going to owe anything to the state? or would that be something TurboTax would tell me after my taxes were checked over? TIA.

The North Carolina Individual Income Tax Return Form D-400 is not yet available for e-filing.  It is estimated to be available on 02/24/2022

Go to this TurboTax website for North Carolina state forms availability - https://care-cdn.prodsupportsite.a.intuit.com/forms-availability/turbotax_nc_online_individual.html

If you want to e-file your federal tax return now then change how you file the NC state return.  This assumes that all of the forms and schedules included in your federal tax return are available for e-filing.

If using the TurboTax online editions click on File on the left side of the online program screen.  On Step 3 of the File section click on Start or Revisit.  Select the button File by Mail.  Then change the filing status of the state return.

After the federal return is e-filed and accepted by the IRS you can e-file the state return when it is available for e-filing.  Just use the same procedure and change the state return back to e-filing

TT let me file my NC return the other day but has been pending since.  It should let you file now but when the state will process is another thing.

This is what I have concluded:

-this isn't a form that I have ever filled out, so I was very confused too

-D400 form isn't new

-pull your state doc's from last year, it's in there

-TT compiles your info from W-2's, 1099 ect and fills this out and files it FOR us

-NC is behind in getting the e-file out, which is probably what TT ect use

-If you want to e-file you have to wait on filling state

-you can file fed now and come back to state

-if you want to fill out this manually you can do that and snail mail returns

My assumption is that once NC opens the e-file, we should be able to log back into TT and finish.

Can anyone tell me about form D 400? my return said it looked good but i had to wait on this form.

I E-filed my Federal and State returns today, but when I save a PDF of the forms necessary for filing no D-400 forms for the State of North Carolina appeared.  I did not discover this until I did not see what my Estimate of State payments would be for 2023.  I can access the two D-400 pages and all the supporting forms (including Estimated Payments) in Turbotax. Does anyone know why Turbotax would not have saved the D-400 forms in the PDF?  I paid $20 for Turbotax to E-file my state return. I am now concerned it may be rejected.  Any comments?

Can anyone tell me about form D 400? my return said it looked good but i had to wait on this form.

hard to know exactly...maybe if it's still in the middle of being filed, the Save-to-PDF doesn't respond as expected....especially if NC has not yet "Accepted" your NC tax return.

Right when you efile a FED/State set:

...the Fed is transmitted to the IRS first...the State is just sitting.

.....ONLY AFTER the IRS "Accepts" the federal tax filing, only then the State is actually transmitted.

..........then you have to wait for the state to actually be accepted.

(IF the Fed is Rejected...then the NC state forms are not even sent)

_______

So if you just filed, your tax file may be in the middle of it all.

I wouldn't worry too much yet...If NC ends up rejecting, you can always re-efile sometime next week...no rush.

___________

Open your tax return.

.....go up to the File menu and select "File"

......form the drop-down menu select "Electronic Filing"

.........from the next drop-down select:   "Show Electronic Filing Staus History"

That will show you where things stand right now.

Don't try to re-e-file.

Once the full process is completed, if the Fed is rejected...you can correct whatever needs to be corrected (After running a software update), and then re-e-file whichever form sets need to be re-e-filed.

The Federal forms must be accepted before the State forms can be actually be sent.

IF both sets are e-filed at the same time, TTX knows to wait for the IRS response before sending in the state forms.
