Amendment not calculating my refund due

I filed my Federal Return and my Hawaii return on 4/20/21. At that time, my Federal return calculated that I owed money, so I set the amount to be withdrawn 5/14/21, knowing I may amend it when I got to finalizing my taxes pre-filing CA.

I contributed ~$4k to a Self-Employed SEP after 4/20/21, but before filing my CA taxes on 5/12/21.

When I entered the info for that SEP contribution of ~$4k, TurboTax displayed I would receive a Federal refund of about $500.

But, then when I select to "amend a return" it doesn't recognize any change in the amount owed/ due. It simply thinks I don't have anything to change from my original return and says I owe $0, and I'll receive $0 refund.

In short, how do I make the "amendment" section of TurboTax recognize the contribution of $4k will lead to a refund, not money owed to the government?

Also, 100% of this $4k is attributable to CA income, $0 relates to Hawaii, so I don't believe I'll need to amend that return.

Amendment not calculating my refund due

You need to first enter the retirement plan contribution, then mail in your California return. Then, go back and delete the retirement plan contribution and then start the amend return process and enter the retirement contribution again and mail in the amended returns.
