For the year 2020
Did you e-file the 2020 tax return?
You complete your tax return by finishing all 3 Steps in the File section. In Step 3, to e-file your tax return, you must click on the large Orange button labeled "Transmit my returns now".
After completing the File section and e-filing your tax return you will receive two emails from TurboTax. The first email when your tax return was transmitted and the second email when the tax return has either been accepted or rejected.
If you have not filed then the tax return cannot be amended. You only amend a tax return that has been filed and Accepted by the IRS.
You can change any of the information on your tax return if it has not been filed.
If you actually filed the tax return it cannot be canceled, changed or retrieved.
You will have to wait until late January for the IRS to start accepting or rejecting 2020 federal tax returns.
If the tax return is rejected you can make any changes necessary and e-file again.
If the tax return is Accepted then you have to wait for the IRS to process the tax return and send the federal tax refund or if taxes were owed and paid, for the payment to process. Then you can file an amended tax return, Form 1040-X. You can only print, sign, date and mail the amended return to the IRS.
The IRS will take 4 months or longer to process a federal amended tax return.
