Just got a 5071C letter. Our Federal return was accepted 1/14/19. idverify.irs.gov upchucked because our phone number couldn't be verified. They suggested to continue to receive yet another letter from the IRS (10 business days -- which in the real world translates to about three weeks). I used TurboTax to avoid this kind of crap. Thanks for nothing, I guess.
So, my questions are as follows:
1. How did Turbotax screw this up so thoroughly? This is the first time in 11 years of filing with Turbotax that we've run into this problem. The State return went through just fine, and we've already received our State refund.
2. Would calling the IRS number to verify run into the same stinking "upchuck" problem regarding our phone number?
3. Once the verification process has been completed, will it actually be 2-3 months before the return is processed?
4. And, as it seems after searching the web, will it be another 2-3 months after the return is processed before we receive our refund? This would put us into September or so, assuming the maximum amount of time the IRS seems to love to use when dealing with us plebeians.
5. Finally, is there any actual way to speed up this process? (I know that this is likely a stupid question, but there you go.)

I totally sympathize here, going through the same thing now, I verified my ID when I received the 5071c letter last week still have not received any update, its super frustrating but that being said is not an issue with TurboTax, this is the second year in a row I have received the 5071c letter to verify my identity (I have zero children and no additional deductions). I believe the IRS has been selecting more and more people to verify to cut back on fraud (still annoying I know).
Its actually a lot easier (at least it was for me) to just call the number on the letter and verify my ID vs trying to use their online system (it also couldn't verify some of my info online). Took maybe 30mins and the IRS rep was actually very nice.
They say it can take up to 9 weeks to process once it is done, if I recall correctly last year it took about 2-3 weeks so it was not nearly as bad as they said it would be. Sadly there is no way to speed this up.

To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/
Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show. Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)
If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created. TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.
Or go to this IRS website for free federal tax return transcripts - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript
For a fee of $43 you can get a complete federal tax return from the IRS by completing Form 4506 - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf
