Question about marital status

I’ve been separated since 2005, and haven’t seen nor heard from my husband in over ten years. I accidentally have put my filing status as single on my tax returns, thinking I was single since I haven’t lived with my husband for many years. I know now I was wrong, and just wondering what to do. Should I call the Irs, or just file my taxes this year with the status “single but filing separately?

Question about marital status

If you have not filed your 2023 tax return, you can change your status from Single to Married and then select that you will Not be filing the tax return with your spouse.

Click on My Info on the left side of the online program screen and edit your personal information.

If you are using the TurboTax desktop editions, click on Personal Info and edit your personal information.

If you have filed the 2023 tax return then you will need to amend the return that was filed to change your Filing Status.

You will have to wait for the IRS to either Accept or Reject your filed federal tax return.
If the return is rejected you can make the necessary changes and e-file again.
If the return is accepted you will have to amend your original tax return. An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 20 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.

Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.
