Pending Status Question

Hello, 

Taxes this year have caused me a lot of stress!

I had to file the following returns this year for 2021:

1) Federal Return

2) PA Resident

3) NY Resident 

(Two resident state returns due to work & living situations - claimed taxes paid in NY as a credit to PA taxes due.) 

My main question is - right now, all three return statuses are pending. TurboTax specialist doesn't see an issue on their end, so I am wondering why the delay. I do know that often state e-files are held up until Federal e-file goes through, so that doesn't worry me.

However, my federal return was fairly simple. Only thing I can really determine that could be holding it up is:

1) Last year I filed a zero AGI return by mail (was unemployed in 2020.) This return is still "processing" since it was a mail-in with $0 income. 

2) This year, I only had two forms of "income" -- First was W-2 income. Second was about $500 of cancelled debt (no 1099-C since under $600.) I added this amount to my taxable income total. 

I am thinking one of these two things could be holding it up. Does anyone have a similar experience?

You are correct, the states are most likely pending because of the federal.  The federal return must process before the states.  However, the pending status is quite normal for this year because of the various issues the IRS is facing.  TurboTax can not see your tax information while it is in this status.  All questions will have to be addressed by the IRS unless the returns are somehow rejected.

Some returns are processing rather quickly unless there is an issue with the amounts reported for Economic payments or Advanced Child Tax Credits.  Those two issues have been causing some delays.

Nothing  you or TurboTax can do in pending status.  Give it a few days.
