Needing Help with Ammended tax return

I e filed my return a week ago Feb 27 2017. A few days later i realized there was mistakes made that caused my tax return to be higher than it should have been. For example the original refund is 5000 but should be only 1000. Should I send the amended return now even though I still have not received my refund. And if I do receive the refund for the 5000, should I send the check back with VOID written on it along with the amended return or can I cash the check and pay what I owe from that check online? I am worried because I do not want to pay interest. Would I be able to pay online and not get pebnalized as long as it's before April 17 2018 right? Please help!

No, you should wait until your return has been fully processed. Once the IRS has accepted and processed the return, you should amend your return with the changes and send payment for the amount that will be owed. If the IRS does sends you the original refund, you can hold on to the refund until after you complete your amended return, and send the amount that was overpaid in error back with the amended return (in the check, money order or credit card payment you use).
