My 2020 return was e-filed in April 2021. I failed to include stock dividends reported on a Form 1099-DIV so I need to amend my 2020 return for the stock dividends. I used the TurboTax 2020 software on my laptop to prepare the 2020 amended return. The Form 1040-X that was generated by TurboTax is "Rev. January 2020". The IRS Form 1040-X Instructions state to use the July 2021 revision of Form 1040-X to amend 2019 and later tax returns.
How do I get the July 2021 revision of Form 1040-X to generate when using TurboTax 2020?

Thanks for your reply. I have already amended the 2020 return using the TurboTax 2020 software installed on my laptop. The issue is that the Form 1040-X generated by TurboTax 2020 is "(Rev. January 2020)" and the IRS Form 1040-X Instructions state that the July 2021 revision needs to be used for amending returns for 2019 and later.
I am having the same problem. TT is givng me 1040-X revision January 2020. While the latest 1040-X on IRS is from 2021. IS it ok to file the one TT is giving us?
Can you tell me what you ended up doing? It seems like there is not a whole lot of difference between rrevision 2020 and the 2021 one?

I agree that the January 2020 version of Form 1040-X looks very similar to the July 2021 version of Form 1040-X.
The IRS is now taking 20 weeks to process amended returns. I don't want to take a chance that the IRS will reject my amended return on the wrong version of the form and wait another 20 weeks for the IRS to process the amended return after I resubmit it on the correct version of the form.
I downloaded the July 2021 version of Form 1040-X today. The PDF is a fillable PDF so you can type in the data and save the form. I typed in the data from the Form 1040-X January 2020 version that TT generated.
TT is no longer accepting e-filing of 2020 amended returns (the window closed on October 15, 2021). Since I have to mail the Form 1040-X and supporting documents anyway, it made sense to me to mail the Form 1040-X July 2021 version that I created instead of the January 2020 version that TT generated.
