Need help with tax amendment

Hi - I recently filed my tax return, and I filed it way too early as I was missing documents, as soon as I filed an amended return to the federal IRS, I then got forms for my taxes on my old car and then a tax form from my university. I do not know what to do now because I just mailed my amended return, and I only filed the amended return to the federal and not the state. What do I do? Should I file another amended return and send it to both the state and federal?

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner.  The IRS does not allow you to take it back.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.”  The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail  it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally.  You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself.  Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

The Form 1040X you need becomes available in late February,  But wait until your return has been processed.

The IRS did accept me, federal and state, I did physically mail my amended return to the federal IRS after I got accepted for my federal return. I just wanted to see if you felt it was necessary to further wait and send in another amended return with my car and school tax forms after my amended return gets accepted or if I should not do it at all. I also got accepted for my state tax return but I am not sure if I should send them an amendment for my taxes, I had to change things such as being a dependent on someone’s tax return and I added my 1099G form as well as well as only one school tax forms <this is the amended return I sent to the federal. Should I do it?

@shelby89 Are you talking about something you did with a 2025 tax return?     The one that could have only been filed very recently in January 2026?   The Form 1040X to amend a 2025 return is not even available yet----so what did you do?    If all of what you did with "amending" was for 2025---you have created a mess.   Sit tight and see what the IRS does with it.
