Filed 2021 Fed return using Turbotax Deluxe. Got confirmation of IRS received and accepted. Did not file state as it was too early and state forms were not ready. Today got deposited the Fed refund. Nice!
Then received email that state forms were ready. Opened Turbotax and had an update installed. Now noticed Federal Tax refund listed in app is less than the original filing. Checked and the AGI, Taxable income, Total Tax are higher. Amount to be refunded is less, and the tax rate increased. And now there is a new form also, 8606.
I did not change anything after filing or now opening the app.
What do I do? Do I sleep well knowing that Turbotax got it right the first time? Or...?
It's a mystery.

Si it may be that the IRS will “ask” for money back…? The submitted amount allowed for a larger return, over $1k, than the now new amount.
And in all of this the IRS had accepted the first.
And as Turbtax messed up, do they take responsibility? They allowed for this to happen…
The program automatically updates with form and tax law changes. The meter could have had a reset which does not affect your forms. You should not have been able to file with forms not ready. Please compare what is showing now to your original to determine the changes. Indeed, if there are true changes, the IRS could adjust your return. However, my guess would be the meter is at fault.

My expected Federal refund yesterday was over $400. Now it’s $1. What changed?
Keep in mind that the refund meter is dynamic and may recalculate with every click and change on your return. Your refund will not be finalized until completion and ready to file.
One way to feel confident in the preparation of your tax return and your refund amount is to compare your prior year's return with the current year. The format of the 1040 has changed from last year, so you cannot compare line numbers. Be sure to review by the line description. Some important lines to consider are total income, taxable income, tax due, total payments, and refund or balance due. This will give you an idea of whether or not you left anything out before you file.
Also, take into consideration any job changes, life changes (marriage, new home, dependents, etc.) that may affect your return. Consider whether or not you have included all sources of income on your return such as W2's, interest, dividends, or self-employment income. Review the Deductions & Credits section of TurboTax to make sure you have taken advantage of all the potential tax breaks. Finally, be sure to run the review to look for any potential errors.
