My tax refund document was returned to sender (me)

Since I'm a non resident alien, I couldn't use turbotax to file my tax refund electronically and I had to mail it physically. So I "sent" it on 4/15, hours before the last pickup using USPS first class mail. However, I just found out that it was returned to me for reasons I don't know yet as it doesn't even say "Return to Sender" on the envelope. I guess I'm done for and will get deported back or something. Is there anything I can do to prevent that...?

If you are a nonresident alien you can't use TurboTax to file your U.S. tax return. You have to file Form 1040NR, which TurboTax does not support. TurboTax has a partnership with Sprintax to prepare a Form 1040NR federal tax return and corresponding state tax return for certain categories of nonresident aliens - international students, scholars and non-resident professionals. Go to the following link for the details of who can use Sprintax, and to get started. If you do not meet the requirements to use Sprintax, you will have to find another way to prepare your Form 1040NR.

Whether you could be deported for not filing your tax return on time is a legal question, not a tax question. You have to consult an immigration lawyer about that.

Yes, and I used Sprintax to file tax. What's the consequence of filing tax refund after due date though? When it was outside of my control as USPS didn't deliver it, there must be a way.

If you are getting a refund there is no penalty for filing late.

You will have to figure out why it was returned to you. If it was returned by USPS without ever reaching the IRS, then the problem has nothing to do with your tax return. Maybe you sent it to an incorrect address, or didn't put enough postage on it. If you are not enclosing a payment with your tax return, any Form 1040NR tax return for an individual has to be mailed to the following address.

Department of the Treasury
Internal Revenue Service
Austin, Texas 73301-0215

Please keep in mind that we cannot give you much help with a Form 1040NR tax return here in TurboTax AnswerXchange, since TurboTax does not support Form 1040NR. If you need more help you should contact Sprintax support.
