Mistake

So I was wrongly told to put myself down as a dependent on my 2021 tax return and I have now (as of 2023) corrected that but it is giving me the recovery rebate credit though I didn't receive any of the stimulus checks due to being a minor at the time they came out. I am wondering if it is a mistake and if TurboTax didn't flag it

TurboTax prepares your tax return with the information you provide, so there is no way for TurboTax to know whether you answered the dependent questions correctly.

A minor could receive the third stimulus payment. If you listed yourself as a dependent, then the person who claimed you would have received the payment if they were eligible.

You can amend your 2021 return to claim yourself as independent to claim the third stimulus.

For instructions see How to amend (change or correct) a return you've already filed.

Generally, someone was eligible for the full amount of the third Economic Impact Payment if they:

  • are a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien (and their spouse if filing a joint return), and
  • are not a dependent of another taxpayer, and
  • had adjusted gross income (AGI) that is not more than:
    • $150,000 if married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower
    • $112,500 if filing as head of household or
    • $75,000 for any other filing status
