Layers of Amended Returns

Hello Tax Experts,

I filed my 2018 taxes in early January 2021 followed by 2019 in min-January 2021 using TurboTax as I always do.  As of this writing, neither federal return has yet posted to my IRS account.  My state revenue service, MA, processed my returns within days and discovered an error in my schedule Cs regarding how I was characterizing cost connected to inventory for both 2018 and 2019.

I figured out how to correct my error for 2020, which I just finished last night but have not yet filed with either state nor federal.

To complicate things further, in my erroneous filings, I payed forward my state refund from 2018 to 2019 to 2020.  The state has "corrected" these numbers, reducing my refund for 2018 and 2019.  I am considering filing amended state returns to recapture the state refund money lost but I don't have any feedback from the IRS about my errors, and I can't get through on the phone.

Since I did all of this within the TurbTax Home and Business, I would like to know how I can change data in 2018, transfer the updated data to 2019, and again to 2020 without having to redo all three returns in their entirety?

Also, If I am potentially filing amended returns before the IRS has processed the original filings, will I be causing more confusion or making myself a juicier audit target by trying to correct these errors at this time?

Please wait before you do anything else.  You have until 04/15/2022 to file your 2018 amended return.  So you still have time.

Yes you can use the base information in TurboTax to amend all of the returns.  Again, wait for the IRS to process the ones you've sent in.

You are correct in saying that things will get very messed up if you try to submit an amended return before the current ones have been processed.
