For Kansas, there is no "amended" return form per se. You will just need to file use Form K-40 and make changes to the form in the system. You will then need to print this Form K-40 and write "Amended" on the top of the form and include a reason for amending with the form (like "Active military stationed in KS with home of record in (your resident state) filed KS resident return in error
Then mail it to: Kansas Income Tax, 915 SW Harrison St., Topeka, KS 66699-1000.
If you are having difficulties with getting the correct copy of the KS K-40 to print form TurboTax (because you are reporting $0 KS sourced income, do the following:
Go to the KS Department of Revenue Website and print a copy of the form, enter your basic information, put in $0 for all income entries, write "amended" on top, include an explanation statement (military stationed in KS file resident return in error) and mail to the KS address listed above or at the KS DoR website. Here is the link - https://www.ksrevenue.org/forms-ii.html (You can even attach a copy of your efiled KS return to this amended KS K-40 to show what you originally filed).
Additionally, just make sure that you are letting the TurboTax system know that you are on active military duty and that you are inputting your state of legal residency (SLR) as your resident state. Your SLR is usually your home of record – the state recorded by the military as your home when you joined the military (regardless of where you are stationed).
For example if your SLR is MT but you are stationed in KS, then you will use MT as your resident state in TurboTax.
If necessary , you may need to edit your personal information under the Personal Info tab (for TurboTax Online sign-in, click Here) to let the TurboTax system know that you are in the U.S. Armed Forces.
You will need to make sure that you select yes -"I am a member or former member of the U.S. Armed Forces (active, reserve or National Guard)".
Also answer "no" to "I lived in another state". (See Screenshot) Even though you may have lived in a different state, this will not apply if you are on active military service in a state other than your home of record state.
