Yes, your original refund and your refund from your amended return are two separate payments.  You should have waited until you received the refund from your original tax return.  If you filed your amended return before your original return was processed, approved, and your refund sent, you may have created a delay in the processing of both.

You can check the status of your original refund by going to Where's My Refund?

You will still get the refund from the first original return or still need to pay the first tax due.  In fact you should not even amend until the first return has fully processed and you get the first refund or your tax due payment has cleared.

Then the amended return is only for the difference you get back or owe.  I think the cover sheet shows what the original return WOULD have been if you did it right the first time.

Go by the actual 1040X.  Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund.  If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16.  If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.

If you have a tax due, do not send the 1040V.  Just include a check with the 1040X.  Ignore the 1040V.  That is for the original return or what the original return would have been if it didn’t need correcting.  Don’t pay the amount on the 1040V.  Pay the amount on the actual 1040X line 20.

Wait for the IRS to finish processing the original return and sends you the refund.  What did you need to amend?  The IRS may catch it and adjust it for you.

This was my first year having to file a dependent. some how when i filed on the 29th, i claimed my daughter for the earned income credit but not as a dependent, i didn’t originally get the child tax credit either? the dependent spot on my return was blank with no dependents. i tried to change it right away but wasn’t given the option until today.

If you claimed the EIC and received it for your child and not just for yourself, it sounds like you are the custodial parent and you told TurboTax that the Non Custodial Parent could claim your child for 2023.

When you say this is the first year having to claim a dependent, was she born in 2023?  If so, did you select that she lived with you for the entire  year or did you select that she lived with you just from the month she was born.  If you did select less than the entire year and she was born in 2023, you will need to go back to the personal info section (DURING THE AMEND PROCESS) and select that she lived with you the WHOLE year.

Are you the custodial or noncustodial parent?

Is there an agreement with the noncustodial parent?  If so, then you cannot claim the Child Tax Credit, as they would get to claim this credit for the child for 2023

On your Schedule EIC, does it show that you have a child or does it just show the EIC for you?  If it does not have your child's name on the form, then it is very likely you did not claim the child at all, and you were able to claim the EIC without a dependent.

Please do not make any changes until you get your refund, this will tell you your return is fully processed.  Once your return is processed, then you can add your child IF no one else is claiming them as a dependent.  Do NOT make any changes prior to hitting the AMEND MY RETURN button when you log back into your account.  Your return needs to start as it was originally sent to the IRS.  If not, you will not end up getting the proper credits when you do Amend Your Return
