IRS Notice says I didn't check a box, but I did

I got IRS Notice CP321D that says when I filled out my 2023 tax return I didn't check the box that says someone else can claim me as a dependent and that someone did claim me (someone else did claim me). But I on the printout of my TurboTax 1040 it clearly shows the box checked "Some can claim: You as a dependent". IRS wants me to "fix your tax return by filling out Form 1040-X". But there is nothing to fix and no information on the notice of what to do. Any advice would be appreciated.

You can try to reply to the IRS notice and send them a copy of your 1040 (both pages) with the box checked and ask them to correct their records.

Thanks. That makes sense. They do not provide a department and an address to receive written responses to the notice. The address on the letter head of the notice is in Austin, TX, but IRS website says to mail 1040-X to Kansas City, MO (I live in NY). Any suggestions on where to send the IRS your recommended letter? Also, my sister just got the same notice. There could be an error in the way TurboTax transmitted the information when we filed?

I just received the same notice with the exact same issue.  Even though the form1040 PDF  is printed with the checkbox being checked on the PDF; however, is it possible the checked box data is missing during the e-filing process between Turbo Tax and IRS?

It's possible the checked box was missing during Efile, as you suggest.  You could follow the letter instructions and mail the 1040X. or submit a copy of your original 1040 with a letter of explanation.

While it looks like a programming error on the IRS side, the most efficient way to deal with it is to amend.  Sending a letter means that someone has to open the letter and read it and that might take months to actually happen.
