Importing a PDF to File an Amendment

I'm trying to file an amendment for my 2016 tax return. I prepared the original filing using the desktop version of TurboTax 2016, but I can only seem to find the PDF of my return (I no longer have access to the .tax2016 file). I tried following tutorials for importing PDFs in the FAQs, but it seems that this only works when importing PDFs for the previous year's returns (i.e. 2015 in this case). Is there a way for me to import the PDF of my 2016 tax returns into TurboTax 2016, so that I can amend them? If not, is there a way I can manually enter in the values into the Forms view to regenerate a .tax2016 file that reflects my original inputs?

Yes if you have the 2016 software.   Just start a new tax return and reproduce the original return exactally as filed.  The print for filing so TurboTax will think that you mail filed.  Then you will be able to amend using the new .tax2016 data file that appears to be what was actually filed.

Amended returns can only be mailed. It is suggested that it be mailed certified with return receipt (or other tracking service) to verify that the IRS receives it.

See this TurboTax FAQ for detailed amend instructions:

-- Amended returns can only be mailed - allow 8-12 weeks - can take up to 16 weeks (4 months) for processing.

You can check the status of the amended return here, but allow 3 weeks after mailing.
