How do I know if I correctly amended a tax return based on my 1040X? I am amending because I originally selected I was not being claimed as a dependent but I was.

Look at your 1040X. In Part I Exemptions, the number in Column A on line 24 should be 1 and the number in Column C on line 24 should be 0. You should see the same numbers in the same columns on p. 1 on line 4.

What if Line 24 column A says 0? Did I do something wrong?

If you claimed yourself on your original tax return and line 24 of column A on the 1040X shows 0, you did something wrong. What often happens is that you made the change on your tax return to say you can be claimed by someone else before you actually started the amended return.

I’m sorry I’m just so confused... what should I do now if 24A shows as 0? My mother received mail from the IRS that it needs fixed but I honestly don’t know how and the amendment software is confusing me.

I assume that you either prepared your original return using the desktop software installed on your computer or you downloaded the software to prepare the amended return since you could not amend a 2017 or earlier return online after mid October.

You were instructed to save an "amend" copy of your return on your computer with a name like "2017 Amended Return with your name" using the "Save as" command If you did that, then the original return that you filed should still be on your computer unchanged from when you filed it. You should open the original return and look to see that it is showing you are claiming yourself. If it is not, change it to show that you are claiming yourself and save it.

Once it is showing the way it was originally filed, do not make any changes to that return until you start the amending process again.
