If i owed in taxes when i originally filed, but now i get a refund after amending them, will i get the refund amount plus the amount i overpaid from my original filing?

If i owed $500 in taxes when i originally filed, but now it says i am to recieve $500 after amending it, does that mean i will recieve a total of $1000 ($500 for the return and $500 for the amount i already overpaid)?

if 1040-X says you will be refunded $500, you can bank on it.

Did you pay the original $500 you owed?  No you only get the amended refund.

The amended return is only for the difference you get back or owe.  I think the cover sheet shows what the original return WOULD have been if you did it right the first time.

Go by the actual 1040X.  Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund.  If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16.  If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.

Yes, this would be for a previous year tax filing, so i already paid the original $500

on the amended return did you indicate the amount already paid? if you did you'll only get back $500. if you didn't you need to enter that payment

line 16 of 1040-X

Total amount paid with request for extension of time to file, tax paid with original return, and additional tax paid after return was filed........................

I feel pretty foolish here as I don't even know how to access and view this 1040-x form from the turbotax dashboard. But to answer your question, no, i did not indicate the amount already paid from my original filing. But i have not yet submitted my amdended tax forms. I am going off of the amount that turbotax says my amdened return will be. So will i be getting my $500 back that i paid AND the $500 refund, or is the refund already taking into account what i had already overpaid?

"the amount already paid from my original filing."

This is a required amount on Form 1040-X

Print and review 1040-X carefully before you SUBMIT it.
