No, you can amend the state without amending your federal return. The steps can be found here below. Depending on which version of the TurboTax software you used to file your state return, you just click on it below to view the steps of amending in that version.
If you need to undo the amend of the federal return, go here for steps for that https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2552802
NOTE: It is recommended to wait until your original state return has been accepted and you have received your refund before amending it.
I am facing a similar issue.
The system shows all the forms and counters for Federal and other states have become 0.
Is it okay to just e-file the particular state that is being amended and NOT print and file others?
I have the same problem.
for Tax year 2022,
I need to amend my Maryland State Return only, but Turbo tax wants me to file an amended Federal Return with $0.00 due also. Do i need to send in my Federal Form 1040-X ?
and for my amended Maryland State Return, If i owe additional Tax on my amended State Return, do i need file and pay the additional Amount Due before the Deadline Date ?
thanks
No, you can actually amend just your Maryland state return only and you will need to pay the amount that is owed. Please see this TurboTax FAQ for assistance in amending your state tax return.
I followed the instructions shown in this TurboTax FAQ for assistance in amending your state tax return.
i went to my state Return and made one change, then when it print out the return (Fed and State) it tells me to send in the 1040-X for my federal amended return.
On the Turbo Tax "Your amended return checklist"
Item #2 says
"Sign and date your return(s)
You’ll have to sign and date at the bottom of your return(s). Your federal return is
named Form 1040X. If you’re filing a state return, the form is located right after the
state instructions sheet"
So are you saying just ignore filing the 1040X since nothing was changed
and just mail in the amended state return ?
thanks
Yes, you only need to mail your amended state tax return. You do not need to mail in the 1040X since you did not make any changes to your federal tax return.
Just to clarify - even though TurboTax generates a 1040X (Federal Amended return), we do not need to file it if we are only trying to amend our state return - correct? I can't seem to figure out how to generate just an amended state return, as it is also producing an amended federal return (which I do not need to file, as I am not changing anything with my federal return).
You can still only amend the state return without filing the 1040X. When you do any type of amendment, a federal form 1040X will generate automatically but you can ignore this and still file your state return.
Once you have entered everything, you print and mail your amended state return. Ignore the federal return (1040X) despite the instructions you receive.
How do I do that? (The error is that the state deduction for long term care was not given even though I did not get the deduction on the federal taxes because I took the standard deduction.)
your answer is very helpful for me. I now have a related problem. My federal tax is right. For my California tax return I should have got a refund of $2000 but I paid $700 earlier as TurboTax did not transfer my prior year rental loss through in my state return.
Now I need to amend the return. I have $2000 refund on the 540X, and $2700 on the X form as I should get the refund of the $700 I wrongly paid as well. The California tax bureau said the amount on X form should be carried over to 540 line 116/117. But TurboTax does not do it, and as those are calculated numbers, I cannot type them in, what do you recommend?
