If you are a J1 student and have been in the US more than 5 years or part years, you need to be filing nonresident returns during that time.

TurboTax is only for US citizens and US residents.  You can receive nonresident tax assistance with Sprintax.

If you filed your returns in TurboTax you will need to amend them.  Please see the process below:

Visit the TurboTax/Sprintax site  and prepare your nonresident returns with Sprintax.  You will need to print the return, you cannot e-file.

You can use the steps here below to amend from 1040, after the IRS has accepted your return and you've received refund (or paid tax due). Then you will need to mail it in, as amended returns cannot be e-filed. So follow the steps here below to help you fix this situation.

You can print the 2019 1040X from the IRS website and follow the instructions below.

**Make sure you check the box to show the tax year that you are amending on the Form 1040X.

Per IRS page 8 1040X instructions

To amend Form 1040 or to file the correct return, do the following:

  • Enter your name, current address, and social security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) on the front of Form 1040X.

  • Don’t enter any other information on page 1. Also, don’t complete Parts I or II on page 2 of Form 1040X.

  • Enter in Part III the reason why you are filing Form 1040X.

  • Complete a new or corrected return ( Form 1040NR).

  • Across the top of the new or corrected return, write “Amended.”

  • Attach the new or corrected return to the back of Form 1040X.

You can file a 1040-NR with Sprintax and use any refund you get from there to offset what you need to pay back when you file the 1040X.  TurboTax does not handle Form 1040-NR.

Got it, thank you a lot!

i think I'll have to pay money back, I've already received the payment in my account but the mistake about the website selection was not on purpose.

have a nice day.
