My medical expenses didnt equal enough to file under federal taxes. but during my iowa state filing it said they can be claimed. i went back to fill but no difference?why

why would the iowa state tax filing tell me to go back and input my medical expenses under the federal filing if i did not already? i recieved no deductions back from state filing either? why does TT let you file them seperately under state tax filing?

Sometimes items not deductible on your federal return are deductible on your state return but the amounts have to be entered on the federal side (most of the state information transfers from the federal entries).

I was kind of assuming that. But even after $1200+ in medical expenses were then added to the federal filing, nothing changed under my state filing. Because there was no option to make sure it was filed under my state nor an option to fill it in separate under the state filing, is there a way to double check it was all counted in my state filing as well? Is there a minimum amount for the state of Iowa in which to get a tax credit from?

If you look at the forms (when you go to file you will see an option to preview the return) you should see the Iowa Itemized deduction worksheet and it will show what counted and what didn't count.
