It would be much easier to do the amendment with the original software. To use TurboTax you would have to create your return exactly the way it was originally.
Thank you! The original software calculated a materially lower tax refund :(
You don’t amend a return unless you are correcting an error. What error are you correcting?
I am not sure either! I think the original software either under applied tax credits or mischaracterized certain tax free income. I am fairly certain all my inputs are identical on the original software and TurboTax. TurboTax has the maximum refund guarantee whereas the original software does not, so I am inclined to trust TurboTax. I am unable to pinpoint how TurboTax’s calculation is different until it files my return and releases the forms, but I am afraid to complicate things with IRS by filing the same form twice instead of properly filing an amendment form. It doesn’t appear that TurboTax would let me file a form 1040-x before filing a form 1040 first? Thanks!
Your problem is that the return you amend has to be exactly the copy that the IRS already has. If TurboTax has a different result you can’t amend.
Ah I see. I think my best bet might be to print out both versions prepared by the softwares, note the differences and manually file 1040x then. Thank you!!
