I sent my amended tax return in April 2020 and the IRS still has not received it

I sent my 1040x to the IRS (and my corresponding state form to the state) on April 19, 2020 because I mistakenly thought I could be claimed as a dependent when I cannot. State refund came within a month, but the IRS still has not logged my return as received in their system. I'm not concerned about how long the processing time will take, it could take a year if it must. I'm not even concerned about the stimulus checks that I never received because they have me as a "dependent" in the federal tax system. I'm concerned that they never received the return in the first place because it has not been logged in their system as received. (I.e., it states the status of my return is unavailable when I use the tool.) Every IRS resource, every news article, every TurboTax forum thread states the same "things are taking longer than usual", etc., and I recognize that, but the IRS states this as an update :

"In some locations, we are caught up or almost caught up. In other locations we are processing returns we received over the summer due to the extended July 15 tax filing due date and, in some cases, are processing tax returns dated as early as April 15, 2020."

Keyword is "processing." The IRS and every resource I've come across delineates between "received" and "processing" - two different statuses. If they are in the processing stage for everything, then why has my return not been marked as received in the system? The IRS says everywhere that I should not submit a second return and that I should not call the IRS unless it's my situation ("Our phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your amended return 16 weeks o...") But every time I try to call, even using the cheat sheet, I get the "due to high volume of calls... call back another time" spiel and then I'm hung up on.

If I were to submit a second amended return for 2019, what is the worst that could happen? I plan on using the new e-file software through TurboTax. At least this way I know for certain they received the return. Second question: when I tried out the e-file for amended returns just to see what it looked like, it also required me to amend my state returns at the same time, otherwise I got the Error 109 and couldn't upload my .tax file to the application. How do I just e-file an amendment to my federal taxes since my amendment for my state is already accepted from May 2020.

I'm also concerned since I'm planning to start to file my 2020 taxes within the next few days - will the fact that my 2019 amendments for my federal taxes haven't been accepted have any consequence on my 2020 tax returns?

Thank you so much in advance! (And please do not use the same copypasta about how things are more delayed than the usual 3 week/16 week business. I know this - honestly, it's the only thing I do know because there are no other resources anywhere. You're doing great work!!)

I agree received and processing are very different. You will want to submit the amended return again. The new efile for an amended return is wonderful.

If the IRS does have the amended return and you submit a new one with the same figures, it will have no net effect.

The amended return will have no effect on your 2020 return. Unless, your original 2019 shows you owing money, then the IRS could take your 2020 refund to pay off the 2019 debt.

Thank you so much, @AmyC!! This is the exact information I was looking for, so I'm hoping that if there are others in this situation, they'll be able to find this thread, too.

One final question: When I go to EFile following TurboTax's instructions, it won't let me proceed unless I resubmit my state return, too. However, I do not need to amend my state tax returns since the amendment was received and processed back in May 2020. If I resubmit with the state amendments that TT is requiring of me, that won't cause any issues with the state, right?

Thank you again!!

You do need to file the federal but not the state. You may be able to select to mark the state as a paper file and then the program will file just the federal. If not, file them both.

The worst case scenario would be the state receiving a duplicate, not ideal but better than federal with nothing.

Glad I could help!
