Did they change your return and add more income? Or are they billing you for a penalty? If you have other income that doesn't take out tax withholding then consider sending in quarterly estimated payments. Did Turbo Tax print out any estimates for you?
You must make quarterly estimated tax payments for the current tax year if both of the following apply:
- 1. You expect to owe at least $1,000 in tax for the current tax year, after subtracting your withholding and credits.
- 2. You expect your withholding and credits to be less than the smaller of:
90% of the tax to be shown on your current year’s tax return, or
100% of the tax shown on your prior year’s tax return. (Your prior year tax return must cover all 12 months).
The 1040ES quarterly estimates are due April 18 June 15, Sept 15 and Jan 17, 2023. Your state will also have their own estimate forms.
Here are the blank Estimates and instructions (the actual 1040ES forms are at the very bottom so scroll way down)

You can pay directly on the IRS website https://www.irs.gov/payments
Be sure to pick the right kind of payment and year.....2022 Estimate
The CP23 says "We changed you 2021 form 1040SR to match our record of your estimated tax payments, credits applied from another tax year, and/or payments received with an extension to file. As a result, you owe $1709.49." Yes Turbo Tax did print out estimates for us.
Payment has been made, just wanting to find out what I need to do to prevent this from happening next year.
You can arrange (for example) to have taxes withheld from any 2022 Social Security benefits or other retirement income; and/or make estimated tax payments during the year.
Better check your return line 26. Do you have an amount? Did you send in that amount as estimated payments last year or with an extension to file 2021? If you did send in extra payments maybe they didn't get applied to your 2021 return. Or you entered something in the wrong place. Did you enter any tax paid? Can you figure out what the amount on line 26 was for? Maybe it goes on a different line.
Thank you for your responses. We have now been assigned a Tax Audit case coordinator who will help us work through the process with the IRS.
