I received a CP23 for an amount due of $30K. However, we paid this back in April. How do I react? Can TurboTax sort this out for me? Thanks - R

Hi - I hope someone can help me with some advice concerning a CP23 form I just received. I received a request for an amount due of $29,800 including penalty and interest of about $1,500 each. However, we paid pretty much this amount ($30K) back in April. We did the return with TurboTax - and the tax I owed in the CP23 equals the number in TurboTax. So I assume I should not owe another 30K. (terrible thought) Hope the community can help or guide me. Can TurboTax sort this out for me? A few questions I would have are: 1/ What is the smartest way of communicating with IRS - I would just call them on Monday? 2/ Should I put something in writing nevertheless? 3/ Did we do something wrong with the payment (see details below)? 4/ Can we get around these penalties? 5/ How do I deal with the Dec 16 date - I don't want to risk any further penalties or get on the tax-not-paid list. But I am not paying 30K that I would then try to get back again. Thanks so much & happy holidays. R CP23 notice Notice date: Nov 23, 2024 It was in my mailbox: Dec 14, 2024 (today, Saturday) Amount due by: Dec 16, 2024 (in 2 days, Monday) Last date to respond: PAYMENT IN APRIL Submitted 04-14-2024 01:15 P.M. Eastern Time (UTC -5:00) Payment Amount: $30,000 Reason for Payment: Extension Payment Type: 4868 (for 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ)

Turbotax can't help. It knows nothing bout this and has no access if you need to provide documentation. the best option is to call.  a mailed letter can take over 5 days to reach the iRS.

if there;'s a number on the notice call that number. Otherwise,

Call 800-829-1040
1) Choose your language,
2) Then choose option 2
3) Then 1
4) Then 3
5) Then 2
6) When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN do nothing – wait - - After it asks twice, you will get another menu
7) Then 2
😎 Then 3

It should then transfer you to an agent. Note when its phone line are busy you may be on hold for a long while or disconnected

you can also try to access your tax return transcript to see what it shows but that requires you to have or set up an ID.me account.

Other notes:

1) make sure you have a record of that amount being removed from whatever account you used to actually pay it.....on or near that date.

2) Sounds like it was an extension payment.   Since it was part of an extension, did you eventually file your final tax forms at a later date...before 15 oct of 2024?   And include that payment as having been made as a part of your final tax return?  (assuming you did pay it back in April).

Certainly, talking with an IRS agent now is the best way to go. to see what happened, and if the~30k payment you made back in April, was properly applied to the correct tax year.
