I received a CP2000 for Tax year 2015 stating I did not claim income of 24860. But my tax form showed it claimed. How do I go about challenging this.

You can challenge an incorrect IRS CP2000 letter. I would recommend the following:

  • Complete the notice response form whether or not you agree or disagree with the notice, the response form explains what actions to take. (Your specific notice may not have a response form. In that case, the notice will have instructions on what to do).

  • Write a letter that explains why the notice is wrong. For example, “the income was reported on my return on line ## and Schedule # with my gross income”.

  • Include the page of your return where the income was reported.

  • Include any other documentation associated with the income the IRS claims you did not report.
