Please explain. Do you really mean that your state return was rejected last year because someone used your SSN on a tax return before you filed? What happened? Being claimed as a dependent would not cause the state to refuse to issue your refund. But if you did not file the state return---you will not receive the refund.
All I know is that last year I filed my taxes through TurboTax, I was told I was owed a certain amount for my state refund. I never received that refund. When I inquired with IRS about it they told me I could not receive my state refund because someone claimed me as a dependent. I sent the forms they asked for and I never heard back. So now, filing this years taxes TurboTax wants to know what I received last year. I was owed money but never got my check so i dont know what to put.
I think you are still confused. The IRS only handles your federal refund---not your state refund. The state you live in handles your state refund. You need to check with your state to see if they have a 2022 state return in the system for you and if so, why they did not pay the refund. What state are you in?
I am confused. I have no idea what’s going. TurboTax said I was owed a certain amount. I never got it. When I went online to find out why it kept saying my state return was “processing” and when I reached out to figure out why they said I could t claim my refund because someone claimed me as a dependent. I might have my terminology confused, sorry. I live in IL.
Sorry, correction. I contacted the Illinois Department of Revenue. I mailed my federal tax return transcript and I never heard back.
Now when I got to MyTax Illinois and enter in the information about the status of last years return it says “The information you entered cannot be matched to a tax return in our system.”
@cand205774 Only the state can tell you what happened with the IL return you mailed. TurboTax gets no information from the state after you file, and cannot find out for you. Contact the state. Your mailed return may have been lost in the mail or lost by the state. If you need to mail it to IL again, use a mailing service like certified mail so you will know they received it.
Thank you, I will try contacting IL Rev Services agian. In the meantime, I do still need help with what to do with TurboTax. In order to file my taxes for this year TurboTax asks for how much I got last year. Do I put the amount I was due (x amount) or do I put the amount I actually received ($0)?
If you received zero ---then you do not enter an amount. You would only enter a state refund if you used itemized deductions on your 2022 tax return. If you used standard deduction for 2022 there is no need to enter a 2022 state refund amount at all.
