Did you already e-file?   If you e-filed, you cannot make any changes at this time.

Yes I e-file

How about ammending the taxes with 1040X form?

If you have NOT e-filed, you can go to MY INFO, click your name and go back through the screens to the question that asks if someone else can claim you.

@ronjdeo Sorry--- you will need to amend but you cannot do that yet.

It is too soon to amend a 2024 tax return.   You have to wait until it has been fully processed by the IRS.  Sometimes the IRS catches and corrects mistakes you made.   And the Form 1040X you will need is not available until mid-February.  Amending too soon can cause confusion and long delays.

Did you e-file first——and now is your parent’s return that claims you as a dependent being rejected when they try to e-file?

Your parents cannot e-file this year---at all.   When you filed a tax return that said no one could claim you as a dependent you put your SSN into the system and it will stay that way for many months even after you amend,   No one else can e-file a tax return with your SSN on it, so now the only way your parents can file their tax return is by mail.  The IRS processes mailed returns a different way, so the duplicate use of your SSN will not stop the IRS from processing your parents' mailed return.   The problem is that it takes the IRS a lot longer to process mailed returns, so if your parents need their refund they will wait a lot longer for it.

If it is any comfort, you (and your parents) are among many young tax filers who make this mistake.  We will be seeing plenty of posts just like yours.   And posts from the parents whose e-files were rejected....

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines. You can not amend the return unless the return has been accepted.

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
  • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
  • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected.
  • You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment
