I need to amend my accepted return because I forgot to allow my dad to allow to claim me as a dependent

Hi! My return was recently accepted but I need to make an amendment to my dependency status to allow my dad to claim me as a dependent. However, when I start the amend and try and update the personal information section it never asks me for that field. I am unable to update my dependency status and I'm not sure what to do. Is there a way to clear and start over with the Personal Info section because I have only been able to prompt the question in a new return.

Also once I file my amended return can my dad e-file or does he have to file by mail?

Thanks!

If you review the personal information section you can click 'Edit' next to your name.  Your name and address will appear on the screen and then if you click continue there will be a list asking if any of these things apply to you.  One of those is "Another taxpayer can claim (your name) on their tax return".  Check that box.

You can efile the amendment but it will take a while for the IRS to process it.  Your father won't be able to efile until after it is processed.  The smart play is probably to mail in the amendment along with your father's return so that they arrive together.  This will delay processing on both returns but will ensure that everything gets processed correctly.
