Please clarify. Are you saying you are not a US citizen and are a non-resident alien (NRA) and prepared a Form 1040 by mistake instead of a Form 1040NR/NR-EZ (which TurboTax cannot do)?
TurboTax can only prepare Form 1040 returns for US citizens and "resident aliens for tax purposes." TurboTax cannot prepare a Form 1040NR/NR-EZ for nonresident aliens. TurboTax has an affiliate partner Sprintax (one "t") that can prepare non-resident alien returns. But you'll need to correct the situation with the Form 1040, too, if that's your situation.
If that's your situation, please provide this additional information:
How long have you been in the USA? When did you first come and for how long?
What visa are you under?
I'm not a tax person, but once you provide the additional info, if that's your situation, I will ask someone familiar with international filing situations to assist you in this forum.
yes this is my situation! thanks so much I appreciated.
I arrived in US at 06/26/19 and I lived in Maryland until the 09/15/20. I had visa J1 Student
I'm also curious if the following is also part of your issue. Since you filed a Form 1040 by mistake, did you receive an economic stimulus payment recently?
I'm asking someone to assist you, but I'm not sure when that will be.
@pk Are you able to please assist this J1 student from Italy who prepared Form 1040 by mistake? Thanks!
Yes, I have. Recently I have received the check from the MD state and I'm waiting for federal tax refund check. All the amount are correct.

It's not clear what your "yes" is. Is that "yes" in response to my question about the special economic stimulus payment? So please clarify. Are you saying you have received the additional $1200 economic stimulus payment that US citizens are currently receiving due to Coronavirus economic loss? That is different from and in addition to a tax refund, but is for US citizens and US resident aliens only, and not non-resident aliens. Since you filed a Form 1040, it makes me wonder if you received the extra payment by mistake. But if you're getting all your payments by checks, there hasn't been time.
As I mentioned above, I've asked someone who can assist you later today on what to do with correcting your Federal and state tax return situations.
No, I haven't receive the 1200$ yet and i want to edit my tax refund for this reason, I don't want to receive this money. I have receive money from tax refund only.
@giorgiadonna , following up on your conversation with @mesquitebean , I am including here my reply to another and similar post -- -->
To fix the filing issue -- using the wrong form -- you need to prepare a new return using the correct form i.e. on 1040-NR or 1040-NR-EZ ( using one of the services/facilities mentioned above ). You will have to print the new return, sign / date, attach the 1040 filed in error (-- marked "for reference -- do not process " ) and include a note explaining that you used the wrong form in error. Send all this out by mail.
To fix the stimulus issue --- (a) if you received a check, and have not cashed it -- then just return the check --- mark cancelled on the front face -- send this along with your corrected filing; (b) if you received a direct deposit or if you have already cashed the check, then just write a new check for the amount from your personal account and include that in the package with your corrected filing - make the check out to US treasury or the IRS. Note that this should be a separate check -- do not include this amount in your check to the IRS if you owe money after you correct your filing error.
Keep good record of the fact that you have returned the stimulus amount back.
Does this help or do you need more specific hlp ?
Thanks a lot!! the last question: which service I can use to do the 1040-NR-EZ?
@giorgiadonna , TurboTax partners with SprinTax for Non-Resident Alien filings. You can also use professional Tax preparers ( as long they are familiar with international filings) and many schools also offer help for their foreign students. If you are abroad, that is back in your home country then contact the US consulate -- they often have an IRS person there whom can guide you. You can also download the form from www.irs.gov and fill these out ( these are fillable .pdf and easy to work with ) - you have to do all the computation yourself .
Does this help ?
