Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

I just got married and I'm filing jointly. Husband previously took 4 years of American Opportunity Credit. However it says he's qualified again and I can't change this?

As stated, my husband took the American Opportunity Credit in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013. We got married in 2016 and I'm filing jointly. TurboTax is telling me that he can claim the AOC credit again, despite that you can only take it for a maximum of 4 times. It will not let me change this! Please help, how can I opt out of this credit?

There is a screen that asks how many times the credit was taken.

You can go back to that and edit,

Sign into your account

Take me to my return

Pick up where I left off

Click open the search box (top right)

Type   letme   in the search box

Click "Jump to letme"

The program will let you pick a different education credit.

(please see screen shot below)

The other way is to

Sign into your account

Take me to my return

Pick up where I left off

Click open the search box (Top Right)

Type   education expenses   in the search box

Click on "Jump to education expenses"

Click Edit next to his name

Scroll down to "Education Information" on the bottom of the next screen and click Edit

Continue through the interview questions

You must answer "Yes" to "Did he ever receive the American Opportunity or Hope Credit?"

A drop-down asks how many times, enter 4
