I have no taxes due or owed and do not need to file taxes for 2016. However, I do have a $700 carryforward to 2017 from a stock sale. Do I need to file the return?

You must report a capital loss on your current year's return. See this previous TT answer for more detail: https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2566411-do-i-have-to-use-a-capital-loss-carryforward-even-if-i-hav...
**Answers are correct to the best of my ability but do not constitute tax or legal advice.**
