Yes it is valid. Call the number. Make sure you have copies of the requested information on the letter. I would recommend calling as close to 8am as possible. I received the same letter and I asked they lady why I was chosen. She said it is because something on your refund flagged them to think it might be tax return fraud. If I had to guess in my case it was because I filed on the 18th of January and my income went up close to $20,000 due to a promotion. And that looks strange to the IRS. I also asked if there was anyway to expedite the process and she said sadly no you will just have to wait. It could take up to 9 more weeks for your refund. So you should call now while it is still slow for them. Get it done ASAP and get your refund. It is all due to the fraud department making sure someone isn't committing identity theft on your tax refund. I wasn't even aware that was a real thing until this happened to me. (If anything it's the IRS that are the real thieves if you ask me). All kidding aside the sooner the better. I have been searching all night looking for answers on how long people actually have to wait after clearing up this issue and it is hard to say. Some get it in as little as 2 weeks some say days others have been waiting for 6+ weeks and no update.
