Husband just received green card, advice on how to file?

When my husband was waiting on his green card and working on a work authorization permit, we were told we both had to claim married filing separately on our W4 and taxes, as it was in our best interest.  My husband just received his green card in April-do we revert to married filing jointly now on our W4, or is it advisable to do so in January '24 for the new year? I read on the irs website that if the individual at any time of the year was a nonresident alien (pending greencard) they can't file jointly, not sure if I understand this correctly?

Before the green card did he meet the substantial resident test?
